  • Lisa Clarke, Executive Director of Economic Development Agency, Destination Medical Center/Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota

Lisa Clarke serves as Executive Director for the Destination Medical Center (DMC) Economic Development Agency (EDA). The DMC initiative, a 20-year, $5.6 billion plan, is intended to position Rochester as the world’s premier destination medical center. With $585 million allocated by the state of Minnesota for public infrastructure support, DMC is the largest public-private economic development partnership in the history of the state.

For 18 years, Clarke served in progressive roles at Mayo Clinic with the past four years focused on providing leadership and strategic direction to realize the DMC vision. Prior to driving the DMC initiative, she served as division chair in the Department of Public Affairs, leading Mayo Clinic’s Community Relations initiatives.

Clarke serves the community and region through participation on several boards. Currently, she serves as chair of the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and as a board member of the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation, the Greater Rochester Arts and Cultural Trust, the Rochester Area Foundation, and the Rochester Airport Company, as well as on the Governance Committee for the Minnesota Medical Manufacturing Partnership. Additionally, Clarke serves on several committees at Mayo Clinic.

She holds a M.B.A. from the University of St. Thomas, and a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse.

  • Plato Ghinos, President Shaner Hotels, Inc

As President, Plato Ghinos is a key member of the Shaner Hotel Group management team. Plato joined Shaner Hotels in 1995 and has since participated in the acquisition and development of multiple hotel and restaurant properties as well as progressed franchise relationships and negotiations with several well-known brands. Most recently, Plato was named as Managing Director of Shaner Italia and is responsible for expanding the company’s hotel portfolio in Italy. Plato previously served for 10 years as Executive Vice-President for Federated National, a real estate development group specializing in the management and development of more than 25 hotels, resorts, restaurants, and apartment complexes. Plato has extensive experience in sales and marketing, as well as hotel and restaurant operations. A native of Athens, Greece, Ghinos came to the United States to attend college, and worked for an international hotel group during graduate school. He received his B.A. in business administration from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and his Masters Degree (M.B.A.) at the American Graduate School of International Management (Thunderbird Campus) in Phoenix, Arizona. Ghinos is a member of several boards including the MINA board for full-service Marriott’s, University of Delaware’s and Pennsylvania State University’s Hotel Restaurant & Institutional Management (HRIM) Advisory Boards, and the Hunter Hotel Investment Conference Advisory Board. He also serves as a franchise advisory member for Marriott International’s Fairfield Inn & Suites brand. Ghinos taught several classes as part of faculty staff at The Pennsylvania State University School of Hotel, Restaurant and Recreation Management and has been a guest lecturer at various universities and hotel investment conferences. Ghinos was honored as a fall 2011 Conti Professor at the Pennsylvania State University School of Hospitality Management.

Shaner Hotels has several hotel properties in or near Medical Campuses. The group manages The Pine Barn In in Danville PA as part of the Geisinger Medical Centre. Other hotel facilities are near the Duke Medical Center in Durham NC and in Jacksonville Beach, FL close to the Mayo Clinic.

  • Kathy Matt, Ph.D.  Dean of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Delaware

During her time as dean she has been instrumental in developing the Health Sciences Complex on the Science, Technology, and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus, a campus created on the site of a former Chrysler assembly plant. The Health Sciences Complex integrates: a primary care clinic, that offers nutritional counseling, mental health services, and fitness and exercise counseling; a physical therapy clinic, and speech language hearing clinic; and shared interdisciplinary and translational research labs—all of which offer state-of-the art facilities for experiential learning and collaborative research. The STAR campus is created as a platform that facilitates collaboration across academia, business, and the community. Dr. Matt also serves as the executive director of the Delaware Health Sciences Alliance (DHSA) – a 501(c) 3 involving Christiana Care Health System, Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, Thomas Jefferson University and the University of Delaware – and co-director of UD’s health education partnership with Thomas Jefferson University. In these capacities she facilitates a broad range of collaborative activities including joint educational programs and faculty appointments, research and educational grant programs, and regional conferences focused on healthcare research, education and delivery.   A future preview of the STAR campus, sits above her desk, where she has a mock-up drawing of her vision: A hotel and conference enter.   • Peter C. Yesawich, Ph.D., Chief Growth Officer, Cancer  Treatment Centers of America

Peter Yesawich serves as the Chief Growth Officer of Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA). In this capacity he is responsible for managing the company’s myriad patient engagement and acquisition efforts, including the development, execution and measurement of its brand communications.

CTCA is a national network of specialty hospitals in Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Tulsa that serve adult patients from around the world. The company offers an integrative approach to care that combines advancements in genomic testing and precision cancer treatment, surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and immunotherapy, with supportive therapies designed to manage side effects and enhance quality of life both during and after treatment. Dr. Yesawich served previously as a partner and principal of MMGY Global, America’s leading travel, leisure and entertainment industry marketing  company. An acknowledged expert in service marketing, he is the author of numerous articles in both trade and professional journals and co-author of Marketing Leadership published by Prentice-Hall. He has also served as a frequent  commentator in such publications as The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, Time and Business Week, and on CNN, Fox, CNBC, BBC World and National Public Radio.

Research Presentations

In the afternoon of the conference, we will feature top researchers who will present leading edge current research on medical tourism and hospitality bridging healthcare.  Presenters will be invited to submit their research papers to the top journal in the field for a special issue on Medical Tourism.
